About UMI Arts Gallery Of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Arts

UMI Arts is the peak Indigenous arts and cultural organisation for Far North Queensland, an area that covers the federal electorates of Leichhardt and Kennedy. UMI Arts is a not-for-profit company managed by an all Indigenous Board of Directors and is based in Cairns. UMI Arts was established in 2005 and its mission is to operate an Indigenous organisation that assists Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to participate in the maintenance, preservation and protection of cultural identity. UMI Arts also acts as the Cairns Indigenous Arts Centre for Indigenous artists living and working in Cairns. UMI Art' Sheridan Street premises is home to 3 professional exhibition galleries, that host a rotating roster of Indigenous exhibitions. You can also find the Retail Shop there, which is a retail outlet that exclusively showcases and sells art and craft items made by Indigenous peoples with cultural connection to the Far North Queensland region. UMI Arts also offers a range of services to the public including, stretching, framing and mounting services, full audio/visual recording studio, venue hire and more. At the broadest level, UMI Arts' goal is to strengthen Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural practices, including visual arts and crafts, dance, ceremony, story telling and music.UMI is a Creole word that means You and Me – for UMI this is significant as we believe that we need to work together to keep our culture strong.
